When developing a website there are a few things to always keep in mind. First, you should never copy any content from others sites including text, images and design style. This is one of the biggest issues facing web developers because it is so simple to do. It is illegal to take information from another source and claim it as you own. To copyright content, you do not have to submit it to any legal organization or government agency. All you have to do is date it. When create a website you and you alone have the right to copy, distribute and alter the work.

Legally dating your information is not needed, but it will be useful if another party steals your copy. By dating a site’s html code, you will be able to call into an account at a later date that you produced the content on that date. Using the copyrighted sign is also an effective way to keep others from copying your content. However, it is not needed under the standard copyright law in the United States as well as International copyright agreements.

Trademarks

Copyright and trade marking are very similar. However, a trademark requires more effort than copyrighting. You will need to fill to register your trademark with the government because it is considered to legally be your property. This will keep other companies from using similar trademarks to misrepresent themselves to potential clients. Just think about the most popular companies in the world. They have trademarks, from the coke logo to the VW Beetle.

A good example of trademark infringement is a small plumbing company creating a logo that looks very similar to the AT&T logo. Most people think that this would be okay because they are in a different industry. However, this is illegal because AT&T can say the company is falsely representing themselves as an entity of AT&T and that it is causing them to lose money because of it. These kinds of infringements occur often and many times will lead to law suits. It is best to find a company to help you set up your own unique brand or develop a brand by yourself.

Branding

The web has lead to a push for all companies to brand themselves. From a simple logo and color schemes to a complete website, branding is very important. It is the way most of your customers will remember you. Branding requires you to submit to copyright and trademark laws. If you plan on branding yourself remember that you cannot just still from other companies. You will need to develop your brand through research and creativity.

In order to not violate any laws, please do not copy any material from other sites. Finding copied text is very easy and more times than not you will get caught. Also, avoid infringing on other companies trademarks. If your brand grows as you should want for it to do, you will face legal action for borrowing others ideas.
